Cedar shake roofing

Cedar still sits on houses in the Avenues, Yalecrest, Harvard-Yale, Federal Heights, parts of the Ogden bench, and scattered streets in Provo and Holladay. It is a specific roof with a specific maintenance life. Utah is drier than the Pacific Northwest, so moss is less automatic, but irrigated shade, roof-mounted swamp coolers, and north slopes still rot shakes. Insurers are also less enthusiastic about cedar than they were. Both facts belong in the estimate.

Repair, replace, or change

A cedar roof with sound shakes and a few split or slipped pieces is a repair: replace the bad shakes, check the valley metal, and clean debris out of the keyways. A roof that is thin, cupping, and leaking in several slopes is a replacement. The third option is a synthetic shake or a heavy architectural shingle when the owner wants the texture without the insurance and maintenance load. We will lay those options out. We will not shame a street for keeping wood, or pretend synthetic is identical.

Interlay felt, the weave of the valley, and hip and ridge caps are the details that separate a cedar roof from a cedar-looking one. A replacement specifies them.

Fire, insurance, and the neighborhood

Cedar burns. That is not a slogan against it; it is why some cities, HOAs, and insurers restrict it, especially near benches and canyons where brush is part of the lot. We do not decide your policy. We tell you to ask your insurer before we order shakes, not after they are on the roof. If they will not renew with cedar, the estimate should already contain the alternative.

Historic districts and the informal look of the Avenues matter. A bright white synthetic on a street of weathered cedar can be the wrong kind of honest. Color and texture are part of the scope, and so is a dumpster plan on a tight street with old trees.

  • Shake-by-shake repairs when the field is sound
  • Full replacements with interlay and new flashings
  • Synthetic shake as a named alternative, not a disguised asphalt tab
  • A note to confirm insurance before cedar is ordered
  • Debris and gutter cleaning, because keyways and cottonwoods do not mix

Shade, sprinklers, and dry Utah air

The Wasatch Front is arid, which helps cedar, and heavily irrigated, which does not. Sprinklers that wet a north eave every morning will rot a shake roof in Holladay or the east benches faster than the climate data suggests. Trim and sprinkler direction are homeowner maintenance, and we will point at them rather than selling a new roof into the same spray.

What we will not do

We will not broom a thick coating over cedar and call it restored. We will not install cedar shake on a dead-low porch. And we will not claim a fire rating the product does not have.

Cedar shake roofing questions

Can I still get a cedar shake roof insured in Utah?

Sometimes, and less often than twenty years ago. Ask your insurer before you pay for cedar. If the answer is no, we price a synthetic shake or a shingle alternative on the same visit so you are not stuck.

Do cedar roofs rot in Utah’s dry climate?

Less than in a wet coastal climate, and still yes on shaded, sprinkled north slopes. Debris sitting in the keyways holds moisture. Maintenance is part of owning cedar. If you do not want that job, say so and we will talk about a different system.

Is synthetic shake the same as cedar?

No. It is a different product that borrows the look. It can be the right choice when insurance, fire, or maintenance rules out wood. We specify the product by name so you are not comparing a photo to a promise.

Will you repair a few slipped shakes?

Yes, when the surrounding shakes are thick enough to be worth saving. If the roof is paper-thin across the slope, a few new shakes will stand up like a patch on a worn coat, and we will recommend replacement instead.

Can you match weathered cedar?

New cedar is a different color until the sun works on it. We will not stain a patch an invented brown and call it invisible. On a street elevation, sometimes the better repair is a larger area so the age looks intentional.

Ask about cedar shake.

The inspection is free when it is tied to work we might do. The written scope comes after we have seen the roof.
